Following initiatives over time

Flooded Cellar has had the rare opportunity of returning to initiatives over extended periods of time in order to show change and impact in the communities where projects are working. This has allowed us to present a more realistic picture of development, because along with the stories of success have come the inevitable failures which can also serve as valuable lessons for project planners.

Codex Alimentarius

From/To: 2013-present
Description: In 2013, the FAO/WHO combined programme on global food standards, the Codex Alimentarius, celebrated its 50th anniversary. Flooded Cellar productions was asked by the Codex Alimentarius secretariat to manage the video production for this event which included a three-country shoot in India, Spain and Uganda, plus the production of original animation which combined stop-motion and vector based work. Since then, we have produced videos about the work and impact of Codex Alimentarius across many regions of the world. The countries covered include: Bangladesh, Chile, Cook Islands, Honduras, India, Lebanon, Spain, Uganda and the United States. We have also produced reports about Codex’s practices and partnerships, such as the United Nation’s International Atomic Energy Agency based in Vienna, Austria.

EU Food Facility

From/To: 2010-11
Description: The global crash in 2008 and subsequent food crisis led the European Union to commit €1 billion of funds to help less developed countries to address the additional challenges brought on by these events. The EU partnered with a number of agencies to do this and their partnership with IFAD included 8 African countries. The money was injected into ongoing IFAD interventions in these countries with the intention of reinforcing and accelerating the impacts of those programmes. Flooded Cellar was hired to document the impacts of this quick injection of funds. Countries covered included: Benin, Burundi, Eritrea, Ghana, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique and Senegal.

The First Mile

From/To: 2004-2015
Description: In 2004, Dr Clive Lightfoot and his work partner, Ueli Scheuermeier set out to revolutionise East African agricultural marketing using ICTs. At that time, few of the actors in the rural market chains that Lightfoot and Scheuermeier were working with had ever used a computer and mobile telephony was in its infancy. Today, this initiative has developed into a commercial enterprise with merchants in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania who buy and sell in a transparent process where farmer and buyer know the prices involved and send and receive payments through secure, cashless systems. These videos follow the progress of this work, alongside the progress of ICTs in Africa, including the birth of the mobile phone and explosion in mobile telephony. Many reports were broadcast on CNN, DW-TV, UNTV and many other regional and local networks.
